🐔 Farms and Chickens🐣
This week we enjoyed learning about chickens and other animals on a farm! As you can imagine, this was a fun week. The children were able to help paint and decorate a chicken coop that we created, made chickens out of paper plates, and decoupage plastic eggs. The children pretended to collect eggs from the coop daily and put them into empty egg cartons.
The egg cartons and baskets were a great way to incorporate math into our curriculum. We counted the eggs outloud as we put them into the egg cartons and used our new counting skills to put eggs into baskets labled 1 - 4. A graph helped us to answer the age old question of what came first, the chicken or the egg?
We had a great time using our imaginations and engaging in socio dramatic play scenarios such as cooking and taking care of our chickens.
Old MacDonald has nothing on our Chicken in a Cup craft! We took red Solo cups, yarn, and wet papertowels to replicate the sound of a chicken clucking! The children could move the paper towel faster or slower on the yarn to see how that would affect the sound. The cup acted like a speaker and amplified the vibrations.
On Monday, the Quarter Notes were introduced to a new teacher, Ms. Becca. She will begin to teach the children how to handle and respect foam violins before we are ready for real instruments. Ms. Becca played a few songs for us such as, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and Pop Goes the Weasel, while we listened to how smooth the violin can sound. We then practiced moving our bodies smoothly across the floor while she played. 🎻
Mrs. Mei repeated how to count to 5 in Mandarin. She asked a tiger (5 years old ) and dog (3 years old) stuffed animal how old they were in Mandarin. The stuffed animals answered her question in Mandarin. The children were shown a globe and were able to see where Taiwan and China are located. Last week, Mrs. Mei taught us the word for moon. We relearned moon and learned the words for star and sun using flashcards. One friend was wearing space leggings so we practiced saying our new Mandarin words while pointing to their pants! It was pretty funny!
On Tuesday and Thursday Ms. Lisa built upon what we learned last week. We kept the beat with our hands on our knees and used the xylophone music as our cues to either stand up or down. Ms. Lisa also taught us triplet words ( ie pineapple, blueberry, etc). Everyone enjoyed drumming and taking a turn playing the triangle!
