🕯 Diwali🕯
Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights. Traditionally, oil lamps and candles are lit to rid of darkness. The lights symbolize good luck, purity, and goodness. Our Quarter Notes have enjoyed creating Diyas, special candle holders for the holiday. During the week we were able to see and hold an assortment of Diyas, make salt dough to create our own votives, then paint and decorate them. The children enjoyed painting and bedazzling their creations with an array of gems. It was pretty exciting to "light" our votives using inexpensive battery operated candles to replicate flames.
Thank you to Sanya's mother for coming into our classroom on Wednesday. We learned about Diwali and colored in some beautiful rangolis. The book, It's Diwali! was read to us and a special snack was provided (Madeleines). We talked about other special holidays we may celebrate with our families. Everyone enjoyed the visit and had a lot of fun!
*Please let us know if there is a traditional holiday you'd like to come in and share with the class. We'd love to have you!
Rangolis are nature inspired patterns created by the entrance of a house by using different materials such as; colored sand, flour or rice, and flower petals during Diwali. These designs encourage the goddesses, Lakshmi to enter the home. Since we made these designs outside, we decided to make our own rangolis with wooden cutouts and marker stamps as well as colored chalk outside on the playground. We hope you enjoyed seeing these chalk rangolis when coming to Suzuki!
The Quarter Notes all love the book, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. We had fun learning letters and making our own coconut tree with the whiteboard and alphabet magnets. Each child was asked to recognize a letter in their name and place it on the whiteboard coconut tree.
Mandarin was so silly! Mrs. Mei read the book, Toes Do Not Have Names. In the book, the toes couldn't decide whether their names should be colors, letters, music scales, fruit, or numbers. They finally decided to mix and match. Then Mrs. Mei surprised us with her hilarious socks. Each toe was a different color. The children laughed and it helped them to review colors in Mandarin. We also reviewed previously learned vocabulary words along with learning the names for apples, banana, pear, orange, and strawberry.
Miss Becca had us review our feet positions, bows, holding our violin in rest position and playing position, along with the different parts of the instrument. The children enjoyed pretending to be popping popcorn or melting butter according to the music. We jumped up and down or gently melted to the floor and lay down.
Miss Lisa is getting us ready for our Thanksgiving concert. We learned some fun Thanksgiving songs and counted pictures of turkeys backwards from ten. Later that day, we were able to hear Miss Lisa play her violin for the whole school. She was accompanied by her friend who played the piano. They played a piece composed by Max Richter followed by Minuet two and Mississippi stop stop. It was beautiful and the children were wonderful listeners!
Thank you families for a wonderful conference day! We enjoyed connecting with everyone. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your children's Suzuki education.
A friendly reminder that the preschool is closed this Monday, November 11th for Veteran's Day. Have a great weekend long weekend! We will see you on Tuesday.
