🦔🐻🐿 Hibernation 🐿🐻🦔
This week seemed to fly by. We have had some friends return from their vacations (Welcome back, Reva and Alesia!), schedule changes due to snow, and we have been getting busy preparing our Holiday gifts for our families. Because we've experienced more indoor time than usual, the Half Notes and Quarter Notes came together to read stories and sing. Since we have been snowed in, we figured we'd take advantage of the weather and learn about hibernation.
We talked about what animals hibernate and how an animal might prepare for hibernation by making their "bed" cozy and eating a lot before their winter nap. The Quarter Notes made a wonderful cave using one of the classroom tables and a large roll of paper. It made a great place for the kids and teddy bears to hibernate.
Construction paper bears were decorated by the children. During circle, we sang a cute song, while the bears helped the children to visualize addition and subtraction. When we added or subtracted a bear, each child put it into or took it out of a little bed. When we were done, we all pretended to go to sleep.
Worksheets that illustrated some animals and examples of places that they may hibernate were colored and cut. Our class worked so hard to use scissors and carefully cut out each animal. We made a bulletin board above the art shelf to display our hard work.
The bulletin board over the circle area has been transformed into a wintry scene. A paper tree was painted green (that was a lot of MESSY fun!) and decorated with glittery pinecone ornaments (sorry in advance for the glitter.....but it does look beautiful!) that Ms. Drago's mother collected for the school, and snowflakes.
Miss Lisa played Winter by Vivaldi. We rang jingle bells and used our shakers piano (soft) or forte (loud), depending on the music. The children also learned dynamics (refers to a note or sound in music). We curled up into a tight ball, sat on our knees, crouched, stood, then put our hands over our heads to demonstrate the different volumes in music. There was a lot of dancing this week! It's great to see the Quarter Notes feeling comfortable and letting loose to the music.
Mrs. Mei reviewed colors and taught us the names of different pieces of clothing (pants, shirts, and shorts). She showed the class an orange, blue, and white hat. We practiced saying these colors and the word hat.
Deb is hosting a spaghetti dinner for families on Thursday, December 19th at 4:30 to 6:30 in our extended day room. We hope you can attend.
Just a friendly reminder that the last day of school is Friday, December 20th. We will return to school on Thursday, January 2nd.
❄ Have a great weekend! ❄
