Winter Traditions

   ❄💙❄ WINTER TRADITIONS ❄💙❄

We have certainly had a lot of winter snow lately! The Quarter Notes enjoyed playing outside and inside with the snow. We brought the outside in with plastic bins filled with snow and cars. The children were asked what would happen to the snow after being inside. Their answers are recorded on a chart on the window above the library area of the classroom. After the snow melted, it was re-frozen in heart shaped ice cube trays. Then we explained that the ice cubes would melt into water yet again. This was a visual way to explain reversible change to the children in a way that they could understand.

Miss Becca brought pretend bows into our classroom on Monday. The children pretended that the bows were tall candles. To protect them from the "flame" we held the bows straight up and down. Miss Becca then made a bunny with her hand. We practiced holding the bows with our bunny hand. 🐰🎻

Mrs. Mei made cute paper doll clothes out of paper. We practiced saying the color of the clothing and different items of clothing in Mandarin.  Each child had the opportunity to mix and match the clothes and dress the paper doll. We read a book about clothing choices. A video on rain was repeated so we could learn a song about a mother walking with an umbrella to pick up her child.  👕👖🌧 We also learned how to say Christmas,  Christmas tree, goose, and ball. Mrs. Mei read the book, Suzy Goose and the Christmas Star. The children loved it.

Miss Lisa sang some festive Christmas songs with us. We danced around the room and followed the beat of the drum and stopped when she played Mississippi Stop Stop.  Later on, we were able to play on our own drums.

Everyone celebrates differently this time if year so we've been trying to incorporate Chanukah and Christmas traditions into our curriculum.  We've started "lightning " our Menorahs each day with paper flames before Chanukah starts on the 23rd. This way, the Menorahs are finished by winter break.

We've been practicing cutting snowflakes out of paper. It's important to keep practicing with scissors to help the children develop the muscles in their hands. The Quarter Notes created some beautiful snowflakes that are decorating the classroom windows. Another way to help develop fine motor skills is the up and down motion while using a paintbrush. We practiced this skill by painting our snowmen that will live inside of our snowglobes. The class thought mixing the water, glitter, and clear glue mixture together was great!

What could be more fun than making gingerbread houses out if graham crackers and frosting? We don't know what was more fun watching everyone create their houses and decorate them or eat them! 🍭

Most of our class loves completing puzzles. Puzzles that required counting and different shapes were put out on one of the tables. There was a lot of cooperation to finish the puzzles and count the puzzle pieces.

            Have a wonderful weekend!
