Snowflakes and Snow ll

               ❄ Snowflakes and Snow❄

Well, we didn't have any snow, but it certainly has been cold enough to! We continued our snow curriculum by learning about how cold it has to be for it to snow and how snow forms.  We made a lot of fun snowflakes using popsicle sticks and hung them around the room. The children counted using a snowman counting worksheet and then colored in their papers.

During circle time, each child was able to help us create a felt board snowman. There's a cute poem that we receit as we each take turns putting eyes, stick hands, etc. onto him.

Everyone loves the classic book, Snow Day by Ezra Jack Keats. This book was the inspiration for a fun snow blizzard activity.  After ready the story to our friends we went to the art table to create our snow storms. We dipped soda bottle bottoms and white pom poms that were clipped to clothes pins into white paint to create snow and snowflakes. When the paint dried, we used glue sticks to glue white paper to the bottom of the "storm." Friends posed for pictures in their coats and hats. The pictures were cut out and glued onto the snow. If you've ever read the book you know that Peter makes footprints in the snow. We recreated this by using Q-tips dipped into blue paint. The final product is hung up on the bulletin board over the art shelf.

Playdough is not only fun when it's too cold to play outside,  but helps us to build the muscles in our hands!

Making crystals was a fun way for the class to try and understand how a snowflake forms as well as observing the crystals progression.

We're already half way through the year! Quarter Notes will start practicing recognizing and writing their names along with letters and numbers. Reusable, wipeable laminated sheets with each child's name will be available for daily practice.

We counted Snowballs (cotton balls) during circle. After the snowballs were counted, we asked each child to put a corresponding block number underneath the cotton balls.

Mrs. Mei introduced us to chopsticks. What a fun time we had putting our thumb and third and fourth fingers into training chopsticks.  We each tried picking up pieces of wrapped candy or tiny beans and putting them into a container. The children counted the objects as they were being picked up. On Friday we read a dragon book and Mrs. Mei showed us two different fans. We also sang a beautiful New Year song in Mandarin.

Miss Becca reintroduced our violin practice (rest position, playing position, bowing, and the different parts of the violin). The electricity went out on the street during class.  The Quarter Notes were very interested as to why this happened.  It didn't affect class though because the Fishman building has such beautiful big windows.

On Tuesday, Miss Lisa taught us how to read musical notes. We used foam circles, donuts, stems, and curves to create whole, half, quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes on a blank sheet. In Thursday's class we sang Little White Duck, practiced blue jello, and acted out the Pussycat poem by pretending to be Kings or Queens and hiding a little mouse under a chair.

* Chinese New Year is January 25th. We will be celebrating on Friday,  January 24th. If you're interested in coming in to the classroom and sharing any food, traditions, or books, please let us know. It can be on any day leading up to celebration. We'd love to have you!

       😊 Have a wonderful weekend! 😊
