FROZEN 11/30-12/04

                                 ❄ FROZEN ❄

The weather certainly doesn't feel like December, but the children love the movie Frozen, so I went with a winter theme. The Quarter Notes had a great week singing and dancing to the Frozen soundtracks, making crafts and learning curriculum with their favorite characters. Olaf's Night-time Before Christmas book and CD were a popular request.

Just like Elsa, we made ice.  Ice and extremely mild temperatures was an easy way to  learn about reversible change. I asked everyone what they thought would happen to the ice cubes outside. Some children knew what would occur and others made educated guesses. It was fun to check out the ice melting during our outside time, much like Olaf might melt in summmmer!!! We then refroze the ice cubes.

Diana: Gonna melt!

Vivi: Melt!

Casey: Ice inside, outside.  Touch this!

Rose: Ice!

Jacob: It will be wet.

Penelope: They'll get rained on. (It was a cloudy day)

It was a lot of fun creating a 3-D Olaf out of cardboard.  The children painted Olaf white and glued on paper pieces to complete the snowman. They turned out pretty cute and the class seemed to enjoy seeing Olaf come to life.

The Quarter Notes loved using their magic Elsa powers to grow their own crystal snowflakes. We created the crystals using hot water and Borax, then dipping pre-made pipe cleaner snowflakes into the mixture to sit overnight. It took days for the crystals to form, but the results were worth it. ❄❄❄❄❄❄

Do You Wanna Build a Snowman? The Quarter Notes did! Much like Matt Man, we put our snowman together by talking about where arms, eyes, nose, etc. are on our bodies. Of course, the song from Frozen was playing in the background.

Frozen alphabet cards were out during choice times to learn letters and the sounds they make. The children are also starting to recognize the letters in their friend's names. They get excited and want the other person to know where the first letter in their name is. I'm starting to see this on the circle rug as well. There are different colored squares with letters inside. A person who sits on a letter may say, "I'm on (insert letter) for (insert name)!"

The class used pipettes to dispense liquid watercolor onto paper snowflakes  Pipettes are great for fine motor skills and help to strengthen those little hands. The snowflakes turned out beautifully! I can't help myself though, we spooned glitter onto them afterwards. Each decoration was hung with a ribbon in the classroom windows.

The Quarter Notes counted 11 snowflakes using their pointer fingers. They wrote their name and the number eleven themselves, then colored in the snowflakes.

We had a fire drill on Thursday.  This was our second drill. Everyone was calm and walked to our meeting spot (The large tree outside of Suzuki, across from Barry's).

Horray for our new bathroom sink! Santa came early and sent his plumber elves to install a much shorter sink on Thursday.

Mandarin: Words for our cold weather outerwear, Asked if we had turkey, pie, mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving (answered yes or no). Counted to nine. Played a memory game.

Music: Played the jingle bells Forte and Piano (loudly, quietly). Learned winter and Christmas songs. Clapped hands to the beat of Mississippi Stop, Stop. Gently picked up our violins. Used chin rests. Bow Bunnies.

Sports: Hopping, skipping, parachute and balls.

*Please bring in hats and mittens for those unexpected fluctuations in temperatures. New England weather can be tough to plan for. Thank you!

                    😊  Enjoy your weekend! 😊
