🐻 Bluberries for Sal 🐻
I've always loved the Caldecott Honor book, Blueberries for Sal, by Robert McCloskey. The Quarter Notes also seemed to enjoy this classic during circle time.
Like Sal, we counted blueberries and put them into our pail. Kurplink, kurplank, klurplunk. The children identified numbers one through five, then used blue packing stickers (blueberries) to correspond to the numbers. Two holes were punched at the top of the pail and pipe cleaners were attached to make a handle.
Everyone has enjoyed writing with the dry erase markers so much that I may just keep this part of our weekly curriculum. Vocabulary words: BLUE, TIN, PAIL, and SAL.
Teddy bears and blueberry counters were in circle area for some socio-dramatic fun!
Dixie cups were perfect for little hands to use as stamps. The children held the top of an upside cup and dipped it into blue or purple paint. Instant blueberry art!
Dancing bluberries: We made blueberries dance in a jar filled with seltzer. The blueberries are denser than the seltzer so they initially sink to the bottom. The bubbles (carbon dioxide) make the blueberries float back to the top. This causes the bubbles to pop and the carbon dioxide is released into the air, making the blueberries less buyount and causing them to sink again. The cycle keeps repeating and make the blueberries look like they're dancing. 😊
We celebrated another birthday this week.
