🎩 GROUNDHOG DAY 🎩
What a busy week we've had! The Quarter Notes had fun learning about Punxatawney Phil, Lunar New Year, and enjoyed playing in the snow outside . The children made predictions and chose whether or not Phil would see his shadow (Six more weeks of winter or early Spring). We wrote YES or NO on the chart, and counted how many people thought it would be an early Spring or 6 more weeks of Winter during circle (2=NO/5=YES).
Everyone seemed to enjoy creating Punxatawney Phil crafts with precut paper, googly eyes, and a popsicle stick. We pretended to come out of hibernation and see our shadows (or not). I reluctantly told the class that the groundhog did see his shadow. Six more weeks of winter for us. 😑
The classroom has been decorated for Lunar New Year. We made lanterns by folding a piece of paper in half, then drawing lines from the fold about 3/4 of the way up.. Everyone worked hard practicing their cutting skills and cutting on the lines. The paper was then unfolded and taped vertically to form a lantern. Two hole punches and pipe cleaners made a handle. The lanterns were attached to yarn and strung on our classroom duct work.
Some of our Quarter Notes are year of the rooster and some are year of the dog. I'm year of the rabbit, but was sad to learn that my birth decade wasn't even an option on these placemats. 😂 I've included a picture below if you would like to find your sign (or feel old). 🐓🐶 Each child will receive a laminated picture of their sign to wear at our party next week.
The children were mesmerized by two videos of a lion dance and a fan dance. The class used scarves to dance around to the music. Later in the week we made fans so we could do our own fan dances. Rythm sticks kept the beat during the lion dance. We had a lot of fun!
Lantern math: I laminated a drawing of lanterns with different numbers on them. The squishy koosh balls and pom pom fireworks were used as counters for one on one correspondence. 🏮
Penelope brought in a musical Chinese nursery rhyme book. The class really enjoyed the presentation and said, "Thank you for sharing!" ❤
Did you know Friday was National Meteorologist Day? The Quarter Notes love being weather watchers! How could I not have them celebrate? We filled out weather charts and talked about the weather. ❄🌨
